We're the only club in the planet that explores the tv rights on our own tv channel AND also own exclusive rights to the Premier League. We "stole" if from a sports channel that has ten times our resources (we even tried to buy the Champions League last year but this time they were onto us). As of today we have around 400.000 subscribers (for 17 home games + Premier League!) paying 9.9€ monthly and will make +30M€ from the channel.

Besides that we've also made a massive investment in our academy that's starting to pay off. Since January 2014 we sold a player that didn't play a full game for our first team for 15.75M€ and a substitute for 15M€ (and are asking another 15M€ for one that's loaned to Valencia). Still waiting for the next Rui Costa to appear though.

Sorry for the offtopic, but I thought I'd try to interest you on giving your thoughts about my club. In any case, I'll keep coming back.Santosnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-71464610101666059982011-03-13T06:14:05.116+01:002011-03-13T06:14:05.116+01:00Hi,

I don't always agree with their conclusions, but I thought the section on Lyon was pretty good.

On the whole, I think that Lyon's strategy makes sense. The question is whether it can take them to the very top, hence the change in the last two years. If so, what did you think?

Also, do you think their spending splurge will work out? It's a big change from their usual tactic of doing a Clough/Taylor and buying cheap and selling for a profit. They could possibly sell Bastos, Lisandro Lopez and Gourcuff for profits but it's not guaranteed - also they'd probably want to keep these guys, as they're all potentially world class. I guess they've figured that if they can get a few players in who are actually unsellable they'll have a real chance of challenging in Europe - but have they got enough quality yet?Jude Elleryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01468148324501984439noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-46795896203346510802010-10-27T08:14:02.500+02:002010-10-27T08:14:02.500+02:00@Øyvind,

I think that it has worked in Lyon's case, because they have an inside track on Brazilians, so they don't over-pay. Other nationalities may be cheaper, but that has to be off-set against the additional difficulties of integrating too many different nationalities. As with most things, I guess it's a balancing act.The Swiss Ramblerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11423088862174893998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-73303638293532928942010-10-27T00:28:40.434+02:002010-10-27T00:28:40.434+02:00Excellent article, thanks for writing it.

So, buying players of other nationalities, without this stereotype would be cheaper and in many cases, of the same quality, or better.

Again, thanks..Øyvindnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-25380906014001900862010-10-26T00:49:35.955+02:002010-10-26T00:49:35.955+02:00Hello

Steve Marlet's € 17,6 M transfer to Fulham in 2001. The man came on a free from Auxerre only 1 year earlier, and was loaned back from Fulham to France only 2 years on. The then went to Wolfsburg on a free, and never commanded a transfer fee again in his career. What a jackpot.

G, OsloAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-62665082160381487712010-10-21T17:22:10.184+02:002010-10-21T17:22:10.184+02:00Very good analysis
Only one small detail to add -...Very good analysis

Only one small detail to add - in the list of young talents we should mention Yanis Tafer, a superstar at youth level, rated by some to be a better prospect than Benzema and potentially worth bucketloads of cash. He's currently on loan at Toulouse.

I've been surprised at Aulas' patience with Puel, but perhaps last season's loss meant he was disinclined to cancel the coach's contract and lose more money. I would agree with Antonis - they're probably waiting for a better coach to come along to make that step up.

Andrei

I don't think the supporters issue will be a problem. For a start success brings more supporters in (Soccernomics suggested they were rapidly becoming the most popular club in France) and at any rate the Rhone-Alpes region is probably populous enough to support both clubs - although regarding the latter point it probably helped Lyon's cause that they were dominating while ASSE were stuck in a quagmire. It would be interesting to see what would happen should ASSE extend this season's comeback.

Besides, the real reason to build a new stadium is to increase revenue from corporate hospitality boxes and the like. That's where most of Arsenal's new matchday revenue comes from. So it's not a question of whether Lyon can fill the new stadium; it's a question of whether they can fill the corporate sections of the new stadium and get enough revenue from the ancillary sources as described by swissramble. And on that front I don't think they'll have a problem.bobetonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-91466961194527081582010-10-20T01:13:24.130+02:002010-10-20T01:13:24.130+02:00Lovely Article,

it seems that they are...brilliant piece, as usual!

it seems that they are highly reliant on the academy and finding transfer bargains in order to turn a profit, but they have realised that this policy will not bring a European trophy. I still think the gap in squad depth and quality between them and the usual suspects is quite high, despite their recent spending spree (also because they have, imho, bought heavily from another club specialised in selling at a profit, namely FC Porto).
however, I wonder if their plan to increase revenue via a new stadium will work, seeing as they are a club with a limited history (before the 7-titles run, they had only 3 French Cups to their name) and are positioned in area where St-Etienne has a lot of supporters.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15788882673685819301noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-51484143942322880072010-10-19T12:05:50.607+02:002010-10-19T12:05:50.607+02:00Lovely article, as usual.
