David Conn's articles are also excellent and help all football supporters gain greater insight into a game that is being taken away from us and handed over to the money men. I understand the dire situation indeed, even more so now. From your expert opinion, apart from hoping for a miracle man, what can Everton do to salvage this sinking ship? I don't understand how some other clubs in the Premiership have smaller grounds, but are able to make improvements to their side year in, year out...Shamim Imranhttp://www.facebook.com/shamim.imrannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-91698987276887553992010-05-30T23:53:44.860+02:002010-05-30T23:53:44.860+02:00Although Lord Grantchester is indeed a very wealth...Although Lord Grantchester is indeed a very wealthy man, he left the Everton board a few years ago, though still owns about 8% of the shares. There have been rumours that he would willing to invest in Everton, but those same rumours suggest that there is a difference of opinion between Bill Kenwright and him.The Swiss Ramblerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11423088862174893998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-84657350826852102432010-05-30T21:11:42.990+02:002010-05-30T21:11:42.990+02:00what about Lord Granchester, who sits on our board...what about Lord Granchester, who sits on our board...is a billionaire, and one of the richest men in the uk?.....what is his role exactly?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-67158365646249691202010-04-25T13:11:02.112+02:002010-04-25T13:11:02.112+02:00Excellent article. Although this was not explained in the accounts, it was mentioned in the Financial Review in the annual report:

"Further significant increases in operating costs were also incurred in the year following the opening of the new Finch Farm training facility. The additional operating costs compared with those incurred at Bellefield are seen as a necessary investment to provide the appropriate training facilities required by both first team players and academy players at a Premier League club of Everton’s standing. Additional costs were also incurred as a result of the participation to the latter stages of the UEFA Cup and Carling Cup."

So, it looks like you are correct, though it is a pretty large increase. The 2006 accounts noted that Finch Farm was "sold on the basis of a sale and leaseback arrangement", so this would have increased the operating costs.

You're also right that the total liabilities are much higher than the net debt figure. At the last balance sheet date, they were £89m.

Thanks again. The Swiss Ramblerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11423088862174893998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-43982081260312557672010-04-15T15:46:18.061+02:002010-04-15T15:46:18.061+02:00A very good article and certainly an eye opener fo...A very good article and certainly an eye opener for fellow blues who believe that all things are rosy in the corridors of power at Goodison Park.

I would personally like to know, although it is clearly obvious, why the club has failed to initiate a rights issue to generate much needed cash for the manager? Even the much maligned Peter Johnson raised £15m for the clubs coffers through a rights issue in 1996. Why hasn’t Mr Kenwright done something similar when such funds were needed to fund the Kings Dock?

Perhaps Mr Kenwright was putting his interests before the interests of Everton Football Club?

In addition to your points it may be worthwhile commenting on the fact that the Kenwright era has also overseen the introduction of numerous mortgages/charges, many of which remain outstanding. Of particular concern to myself is the fact that the club are now borrowing against future Premier League broadcasting and merit placement income some two years in advance of when it is actually due.

Perhaps this recent spate of ‘advances’ and associated charges are what caused ‘other operating costs’ in the clubs accounts to mysteriously jump from £11m in 2006/7 to £22m in 2007/8? Perhaps this jump may relate to the increasing costs associated with the lease of Finch Farm? Who knows? Unfortunately the club failed to explain this in the accounts.

Finally, you also refer to the net debt in your article; it may be worth investigating the actual total debt liabilities that have burdened the club over the past 10 years or so. This total debt figure, the money actually owed to creditors, is far greater than the more palatable £38m net debt figures spoken of today.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
