And the most influential.

An Premier League or Bundesliga style distribution of the an equal amount of TV money to what La Liga clubs get now would lead many of the lower clubs out of their financial difficulties, making a more competitive, financially stable and attractive league all-around.

Sure, Barcelona and Real might have to make some wage cuts initially, but it could easily be made up for by international TV rights growth. La Liga would be in a good position to become the Premier League of the Spanish-speaking world (of which there is a globally significant population) with this change.

Barcelona and Real would likely still be consistently the top two in the league, but it wouldn't be nearly like it is now. At least the deck wouldn't be so vehemently stacked against the other clubs.Mikenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-49094857330296756212012-11-06T04:44:37.115+01:002012-11-06T04:44:37.115+01:00nice article bronice article broGerrardnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-28573491723980927202012-10-29T22:39:11.674+01:002012-10-29T22:39:11.674+01:00Commented on the wrong article, sorry.Commented on the wrong article, sorry.Raffa Pancamonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-89256654772839060662012-10-29T18:23:35.639+01:002012-10-29T18:23:35.639+01:00Lovely to see you finaly writing about BVBs succes...Lovely to see you finaly writing about BVBs succes story! They basically made it difficult for Barca and RM to recover when they scheduled an el Clasico between the CL semi-finals last season. However yes the PL is better marketed than La Liga. In fact much so. In my country, Malaysia, its only been 2 years since El clasico was marketed on the level of say Man Utd v Liverpool or Man utd Arsenal. Also mid-level PL teams like spurs and Newcaslte have a lot of supporters compared to their counterparts in La Liga. I believe Valencia and Atleti Madrid have a lot of supporters globally but perhaps not as much as PL teams like Arsenal and Liverpool.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-52652526780014136262012-10-26T22:40:42.323+02:002012-10-26T22:40:42.323+02:00Any interest on an article about the current (almo...Any interest on an article about the current (almost finished) Bidding war on EPL broadcasting rights in the US? If Catalan independence to happen, Barca would have a tricky political position to occupy and probably anger some rather hardcore elements by insisting their continue existence as a Spanish entity, otherwise they would no longer be commercially viable to their required degree.Paul Hhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11861596717885180719noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-81931420896021940652012-10-26T03:57:30.943+02:002012-10-26T03:57:30.943+02:00I'd have to agree, as a "product" or...I'd have to agree, as a "product" or 'brand" the PL is light years ahead of where La Liga, regardless of arguments about technical proficiency on the field, attractiveness or style. The profit derived from the PL by its partners dwarfs what is derived from La Liga, which mostly comes down to exposure.

While PL games can easily be found on TV in North America through basic cable or easily acessible specialty packages, La Liga the case is less so. So that makes clubs like Tottenham, Newcastle or West Ham recognizable to less than hardcore fans, the case is not the same for Betis, Mallorca or Levante. Recognition translates to marketability, which equals dollars, euros or pounds. This is especially true for more emerging markets like Asia, where the PL is the most watched, most popular league.
The prestigious clubs argument therefore doesn't hold water in a broader sense, they may have rich storied histories, but are unknown outside of Spain or hardcore fans.
They may play attractive football, though that is a purely subjective argument, as the PL can be seen as extremely attractive and exciting due to the speed and end to end action; rather than the more perceived static and technical nature of La Liga as typified by the Barca/tiki-taka style that garnered such negative media attention during this past Euro campaign by Spain.
All in all, the PL as a commercial product is a far more valuable commodity, therefore the far higher TV deal. Markets determine the value of the product, and the PL is clearly the more valuable product, and likely will continue to be regardless of any changes in the future barring something truly game changing.Paul Hhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11861596717885180719noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-42286007109407678532012-10-25T07:17:51.537+02:002012-10-25T07:17:51.537+02:00"I'm actually a fan of La Liga football, ..."I'm actually a fan of La Liga football, but its "product" is still far inferior to the Premier League."

You presented lots of your opinions as facts, so thank you for your opinions but they are the incorrect opinions.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-46520109913137453232012-10-23T19:53:31.996+02:002012-10-23T19:53:31.996+02:00Thanks for an interesting blog. How have they managed that, is it the pre-season tours that generate the growth or is it the local Spanish supporters that spend more money on football? Compared to German teams like Dortmund it is really striking how much more revenue per spectator they make.
From the article referenced in the blog post I understand that Spanish ticket prices are indeed very high, but the stadiums are generally not sold out. This begs the question if it really makes sense to invest in stadium development? I know Atletico and Valencia are already doing it, but it seems to have caused at least Valencia economical troubles.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-68190378367562578922012-10-23T15:39:10.882+02:002012-10-23T15:39:10.882+02:00@Eagleye_UK,

And they reached the final. Also, the Spanish authorities reschedule domestic games for teams competing in European competition for basically whenever they like, giving them an unfair competitive advantage.

I'm actually a fan of La Liga football, but its "product" is still far inferior to the Premier League. The new PL TV deal is somewhat unprecedented, but given the increase in the number of live games, to suggest it is inflated would be to massively underestimate the abilities of Sky and BT to extract money from football consumers.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-43865705614583320172012-10-23T13:03:05.355+02:002012-10-23T13:03:05.355+02:00Great article. The Barça / Real dominance is deep ...Great article. The Barça / Real dominance is deep seated in spanish culture. I've even seen Barça and Real crisps side by side in a supermarket. My argument to supporters of these 2 (those far away from Barcelona and Madrid at least) is that being a supporter of one is like supporting the other. The duopoly and blanket media coverage is quite enfuriating - i've evn seen a day when, after interesting "Copa del Rey" ties, the sports news was exclusively reporting news of Ronaldo's birthday and Messi filming a publicity spot. Is it any wonder that the 2 "Gemelos" (twins) make such profits while the rest a deep in trouble. Go down a division or two and the situation is dire. Those that rule the game can posture all they like about winning World Cup and Eurocups.....but their inept management of the game in Spain down the chain does local football no favours, and in consequence helps push the Real/Barça snowball. Something you didn't mention in your report is the growing demand for Catalan independence. Although many in Spain will say this will mean Barça expulsion from La Liga....I think Real Madrid would be the first to demand their inclusion. Like conjoined twins, they share vital organs....¿is it likely either would survive without the other?Guirihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10975293595291533788noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-65381357604336215702012-10-21T19:55:04.057+02:002012-10-21T19:55:04.057+02:00Not really,La Liga for me and many other people I ...Not really,La Liga for me and many other people I may add is the best and most entertaining league in the world.Even though there is a heavy imbalance between the 2 best teams in the world and the rest of the league La Liga is still number 1 in terms of coefficient points,Spanish teams dominate the Europa League where as the EPL fails miserably.

It is technically the best league in the world, many great footballers and prestigious clubs that play football.

The only reason the T.V deal is so low compared to the EPL one is that the EPL one is just ridiculous,BT have over payed massively and the economic situation in Spain which means the La Liga T.V deal is massively under payed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487486960623783530.post-22441932781101294592012-10-21T15:16:00.413+02:002012-10-21T15:16:00.413+02:00Swiss Ramble, Fabulous fabulous work, as always.
